Women’s Bill of Right in San Jose Moves Forward!
The City Council unanimously fast-tracked my proposal to develop a Women’s Bill of Rights ordinance also know as the Convention of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
This ordinance would help ensure San Jose is gender equitable. That our hiring, our policies, and programs reflect that goal. Research shows that inadvertent discrimination is common without proactive review of city activities. It is a process, a fairer way of operating, not a separate program. San Jose is a progressive city but discrimination is hidden and pervasive and without light, we cannot end discriminatory practices.
Thank you to the Mayor and my fellow Councilmembers for their support and to our CEDAW taskforce, the Santa Clara County Office of Women’s Policy, the Commission on the Status of Women and all of the advocates that came out today.
